So here's suggestion number one: Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara County might be a good start. It's about 2 hours west of Pasadena. See link below for more info. There are restrooms and showers for the ladies, and still enough places for Derek to go Man vs. Wild. whatever that means.

It's got boat rentals and short trails from 1/4 mile to 4 miles. It's a bit picnicky, with golf courses nearby, but I'm willing to ignore them. Picnic tables and BBQ pit included.
